Last month, we set up a Culvert trap in the area of Trnovski gozd to capture a bear in order to fit it with a global positioning system (GPS) collar. GPS-collars allow us to track bear movement and collect their life history data.

A younger adult bear was captured in the trap last week. The members of the project team quickly reached the capture site, where the bear was successfully anesthetized. The vet confirmed the bear was of good health and in excellent body condition. We measured the bear and fitted it with telemetry collar.  Just under 150 kg and between 4-5 year old male bear was named Tinček, after a local hunter who helped with the capture.

The main purpose of following Tinček is studying his movement outside the bear core area and learning about bears roaming the Alpine Slovenian-Italian border area.
