Bear conservation status

Conservation of the Slovenian brown bear population is not only important for Slovenia but also on an international level as it represents a source of specimens for natural re-conolization of the Alps (Kaczensky and Gossow, 2000). Therefore the Brown bear management strategy (Ursus arctos) in Slovenia also incorporates international agreements that govern the bear’s conservation:

  • the Bern Convention – on the conservation of European wildlife and natural habitats,
  • the Alpine Convention – protocol on implementation of the 1991 Alpine Convention on nature protection and landscaping,
  • CITES, the Washington Convention– convention on international trade in endangered species and of wild flora and fauna
  • Convention on Biological Diversity, Rio de Janeiro, 1992.

Bear preservation is also stipulated in European Union regulations:

  • FFH Directive (the Habitats Directive) – Guidelines for protection of flora, fauna and habitats
  • Resolution on the protection of the brown bear (Ursus arctos) in the Community.
