An important aspect in managing bears is to know the population status, especially regarding its size. One activity in LIFE DINALP BEAR project is where we are conducting a survey of bears in sections of Slovenia and Croatia with the help of 2000 volunteers (hunters and foresters). Samples of bear scats are pouring in (going 2400 samples in both countries after 45 days of sampling) and once the season is over, we will start analyzing the samples in laboratory. Genetic analyses will give us information on the identity of bears based on which we will be able to, using statistical methods, estimate number of bears in sampling area. For more information, see full media release (in Slovene).
