In the second half of the year 2017 and the first half of 2018, we continued monitoring the effectiveness of mitigation measures implemented to prevent traffic related bear mortality along the selected road sections of the road Ljubljana – Kočevje and the selected railway section between Ljubljana – Postojna (Rakek) and Postojna – Prestranek. The same as on the locations of Jasnica and Ortnek (reports 2016 and 2017), the reduction of speed of vehicles, which passed activated dynamics signs at Turjak, was app. 6 km/h. The observed reduction of vehicle speed in year 2018 confirms the positive impact of activated dynamic signs on driver’s behaviour on the Turjak location.

According to mortality data, the mitigation measures implemented on selected road and railway sections are effective, since the bear mortality on protected sections was reduced on average for more than 50% yearly. Furthermore, video surveillance in the last year confirmed proper location of mitigated sections. Especially in Jasnica we filmed a high number of wildlife in the vicinity of road. Brown bear was again observed twice, i.e. very close to the main road at Jasnica and Turjak.
